One of the by-products formed during the recovery of NH₃ from Solvay process is :
- (a) Ca(OH)₂
- (b) NH₄Cl
- (c) NaHCO₃
- (d) CaCl₂
Answer and solution
Answer (d) CaCl₂
Solution
Chemistry ma’am · 3 steps
Ammonia is recovered by heating NH₄Cl with lime, and the calcium is left behind as CaCl₂.
- Main reaction. Brine is saturated with NH₃ and CO₂ is passed through it. NaHCO₃ precipitates because it is only sparingly soluble, and NH₄Cl stays in solution: NaCl + NH₃ + CO₂ + H₂O → NaHCO₃ + NH₄Cl.
- Recovering ammonia. NH₃ is too costly to throw away, so the NH₄Cl solution is heated with slaked lime. The lime comes from heating limestone, CaCO₃ → CaO + CO₂, followed by CaO + H₂O → Ca(OH)₂.
2NH₄Cl + Ca(OH)₂ → 2NH₃ ↑ + CaCl₂ + 2H₂O
- So. NH₃ goes back into the process, and CaCl₂ is the by-product of this step. The answer is (d).
The idea to keep. In the Solvay process, CO₂ and NH₃ are both recycled. The only real waste is CaCl₂, formed when NH₄Cl is treated with Ca(OH)₂.
