Two angular nodes fixes l = 2, a d orbital; then use n - l - 1 to find which d has two radial nodes.
- Two node formulas. The number of angular nodes equals l. The number of radial nodes equals n - l - 1. Together they add up to n - 1 nodes in all.
- Angular nodes first. Two angular nodes means l = 2, so the orbital must be a d orbital. Then two radial nodes means n - 2 - 1 = 2, which gives n = 5.
Orbital n, l Angular nodes (l) Radial nodes (n - l - 1) 3p 3, 1 1 3 - 1 - 1 = 1 5d 5, 2 2 5 - 2 - 1 = 2 4d 4, 2 2 4 - 2 - 1 = 1 4f 4, 3 3 4 - 3 - 1 = 0 - So. Only 5d has two radial nodes and two angular nodes, so the answer is (b).
The idea to keep. Angular nodes come from l alone, and radial nodes are n - l - 1. Read off l from the angular nodes first, then use the radial count to find n.
