|---|---|---|---|
| (a) | Sucralose | (i) | Synthetic detergent |
| (b) | Glyceryl ester of stearic acid | (ii) | Artificial sweetener |
| (c) | Sodium benzoate | (iii) | Antiseptic |
| (d) | Bithionol | (iv) | Food preservative |

Answer and solution
Answer (d) (a)-(ii), (b)-(i), (c)-(iv), (d)-(iii)
Solution

Sucralose and sodium benzoate are certain; once those two are placed, only one option is left standing.
- Start with sure ones. Sucralose is the trichloro derivative of sucrose. It tastes about 600 times sweeter than sugar and is not broken down for calories, so it is an artificial sweetener. Sodium benzoate is the standard food preservative in jams, sauces and squashes.
- The other two. Bithionol is added to medicated soaps to give them antiseptic properties. The glyceryl ester of stearic acid has a long, water-hating stearate tail joined to a glycerol head rich in -OH groups. That uncharged head and long tail make it a non-ionic synthetic detergent.
Compound Why Used as (a) Sucralose chlorinated sucrose, very sweet, no calories (ii) artificial sweetener (b) Glyceryl ester of stearic acid long hydrocarbon tail with an uncharged polar head (i) synthetic detergent (c) Sodium benzoate stops microbes from growing in food (iv) food preservative (d) Bithionol added to soaps to kill germs on skin (iii) antiseptic - So. The match is (a)-(ii), (b)-(i), (c)-(iv), (d)-(iii), which is option (d).
The idea to keep. In match-the-column questions, fix the pairs you are surest of first and strike out options. Remember the soap trio: bithionol makes soap antiseptic, and esters of stearic acid with polyols are non-ionic detergents.
