JEE Main 2023 · 10 April · morning · Single correct · +4 / −1

Given below are two statements:
Statement I : Pressure in a reservoir of water is same at all points at the same level of water.
Statement II : The pressure applied to enclosed water is transmitted in all directions equally.
In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below:

  1. (a) Both Statement I and Statement II are false
  2. (b) Statement I is false but Statement II is true
  3. (c) Statement I is true but Statement II is false
  4. (d) Both Statement I and Statement II are true
Answer and solution

Answer (d) Both Statement I and Statement II are true

Both lines are textbook facts about fluids at rest, so check each one against P = P₀ + ρ g h and Pascal.

  1. Statement I. In water at rest, pressure depends only on depth: P = P₀ + ρ g h. Points at the same level have the same h, so they have the same pressure. Statement I is true.

    P = P₀ + ρ g h

  2. Why it must hold. If two points at the same level had different pressures, a net horizontal force would push water from one to the other. Water at rest has no such flow, so the pressures must be equal.
  3. Statement II. This is Pascal's law: extra pressure applied to an enclosed fluid is passed on undiminished to every part of the fluid and to the container walls. Statement II is true.
  4. So. Both statements are true, which is option (d).

The idea to keep. In a fluid at rest, pressure changes only with depth, never sideways. Push on an enclosed fluid anywhere and that extra pressure reaches every point equally.
