Figures (a), (b), (c) and (d) show variation of force with time.
The impulse is highest in figure.
- (a) Fig (c)
- (b) Fig (d)
- (c) Fig (a)
- (d) Fig (b)
Answer and solution
Answer (d) Fig (b)

Impulse is the area under the F–t graph, so find each area and pick the biggest one.
- Impulse as area. Impulse is J = ∫ F dt, which is the area between the force curve and the time axis. Each graph here is a triangle or a rectangle, so you only need simple area formulas.
Figure Shape Area Impulse (a) triangle, base 1 s, height 0.5 N 1/2 × 1 × 0.5 0.25 N s (b) rectangle, 2 s by 0.5 N 2 × 0.5 1 N s (c) triangle, base 1 s, height 0.75 N 1/2 × 1 × 0.75 0.375 N s (d) triangle, base 2 s, height 0.5 N 1/2 × 2 × 0.5 0.5 N s - So. Fig (b) has the largest area, 1 N s, so the impulse is highest in Fig (b), which is option (d).
The idea to keep. On any force–time graph, impulse is the area under the curve. A high peak does not win on its own: both the force and how long it acts count.
