How we count: 7× asked means 7 past JEE Main questions in the PrepWiser bank needed that concept, and "last" is the latest year one appeared. ★ marks ideas asked 8 or more times.

AC voltage and current

Sinusoidal AC
8× asked, last 2025
i=I0sin⁡(ωt+ϕ),ω=2πf=2πTi = I_0\sin(\omega t+\phi),\qquad \omega = 2\pi f = \frac{2\pi}{T}
The number before sin is the peak; the number with tt is ω\omega, not ff. Indian mains: 50 Hz, so T=20T=20 ms.
ttiiT/4T/4T/2T/2I0I_0I0/2I_0/2T/8T/8T/6T/6peakrms
Time depends only on phase: zero to peak T/4T/4; rms to peak T/8T/8; half-peak to peak T/6T/6
  • Quick method. Timing questions depend only on phase: Δt=Δθ/ω\Delta t=\Delta\theta/\omega. Zero to peak takes T/4T/4, peak to rms T/8T/8, half-peak to peak T/6T/6. The voltage, RR and the rating do not matter.
Peak, rms and average values
11× asked, last 2025
Irms=I02,Iˉhalf cycle=2I0π,Iˉfull cycle=0I_{\text{rms}}=\frac{I_0}{\sqrt2},\qquad \bar I_{\text{half cycle}}=\frac{2I_0}{\pi},\qquad \bar I_{\text{full cycle}}=0
Sine waves only. Meters, ratings and 220 V mains are rms unless 'peak' is said. Heat and power use rms.
ωt\omega tiiπ\pi2π2\piI0I_0I0/2I_0/\sqrt2 (rms)mean 2I0/π2I_0/\pi
Shaded half cycle: area 2I0/ω2I_0/\omega, so the mean is 2I0/π2I_0/\pi; over a full cycle the mean is 0
  • Any wave: ⟨i⟩=(1/T)∫i dt\langle i\rangle=(1/T)\int i\,dt. Half-wave rectified I0/πI_0/\pi; full-wave 2I0/π2I_0/\pi (rms I0/2I_0/\sqrt2). Over a half cycle: square I0I_0, triangular I0/2I_0/2. DC + AC: IdcI_{\text{dc}}.
  • Not a second 2\sqrt2. Convert between peak and rms exactly once. In E0sin⁡ωtE_0\sin\omega t the coefficient is already the peak; an ammeter shows I0/2I_0/\sqrt2; a rated current P/VP/V is rms, so the peak is 2\sqrt2 times it.
  • Not the peak value in I2RtI^2Rt. Heating uses Irms2I_{\text{rms}}^2, so an AC of peak I0I_0 gives half the heat of a steady DC I0I_0 in the same resistor.
rms of any waveform
7× asked, last 2026
Irms=⟨i2⟩=1T∫0Ti2 dt,Irms=Idc2+I022I_{\text{rms}}=\sqrt{\langle i^2\rangle}=\sqrt{\frac1T\int_0^T i^2\,dt},\qquad I_{\text{rms}}=\sqrt{I_{\text{dc}}^2+\frac{I_0^2}{2}}
Average the square over one period, then take the root. Second form: a DC level plus a sine of peak I0I_0.
Waveform (peak I0I_0)rms
SineI0/2I_0/\sqrt2
Square ±I0\pm I_0I0I_0
Triangle or rampI0/3I_0/\sqrt3
Half-wave rectifiedI0/2I_0/2
Full-wave rectifiedI0/2I_0/\sqrt2
  • The 1/21/\sqrt2 is for sines only. Square wave ±I0\pm I_0: rms =I0=I_0. Linear ramp or triangular wave of peak I0I_0: I0/3I_0/\sqrt3. Half-wave rectified sine: I0/2I_0/2.
  • Not Idc+I0/2I_{\text{dc}}+I_0/\sqrt2 or I1+I2I_1+I_2. Mean squares add only if cross terms average to zero (DC + sine; sines 90∘90^\circ apart or of different ω\omega): I1sin⁡ωt+I2cos⁡ωtI_1\sin\omega t+I_2\cos\omega t has rms (I12+I22)/2\sqrt{(I_1^2+I_2^2)/2}.
  • Quick method. Same-ω\omega sines with phase gap δ\delta: add as phasors, I0=I12+I22+2I1I2cos⁡δI_0=\sqrt{I_1^2+I_2^2+2I_1I_2\cos\delta} (I12+I22\sqrt{I_1^2+I_2^2} at δ=90∘\delta=90^\circ), then rms =I0/2=I_0/\sqrt2.
