How we count: 7× asked means 7 past JEE Main questions in the PrepWiser bank needed that concept, and "last" is the latest year one appeared. ★ marks ideas asked 8 or more times.

sp² carboxyl C. H-bonded dimers persist even in vapour. C1–C4 acids mix with water; solubility falls as the chain grows.

Counted on each structure: picric and carbolic acids are phenols.

M 58–60, standard b.p.: acid dimers boil highest (sheet order)
  • Not acetic acid as the first member. The series starts at HCOOH\ce{HCOOH} (n=0n=0). So CHX3COOH\ce{CH3COOH} (CX2HX4OX2\ce{C2H4O2}) is the second homologue and CX3HX6OX2\ce{C3H6O2} the third.
  • Not every 'acid' by name has –COOH. Check the structure: picric acid is a trinitrophenol. Count only true –COOH groups.

Any side chain with a benzylic H becomes –COOH; tert-butyl is not oxidised. Mild hydrolysis of a nitrile stops at the amide.

Acids made from each structure (the ester’s OCH₃ carbon leaves as CH₃OH and is not counted). Side-chain oxidation keeps only the benzylic carbon; tert-butylbenzene has no benzylic H and is not oxidised.
  • Not an acid from every route. PCC (from RCHX2OH\ce{RCH2OH}) and Stephen (RCN\ce{RCN}, SnClX2/HCl\ce{SnCl2/HCl} then HX3OX+\ce{H3O+}) stop at the aldehyde; mild hydrolysis of RCN stops at the amide.
  • Quick method. Count carbons first: Grignard + COX2\ce{CO2} adds one C, haloform removes one, hydrolysis of –CN, −CClX3\ce{-CCl3} or an ester keeps the count. CHX3CHX2CHX2MgBr\ce{CH3CH2CH2MgBr} + COX2\ce{CO2} gives butanoic, not propanoic, acid.
Also remember
  • Uses: HCOOH\ce{HCOOH} in rubber, textile, dyeing, leather and electroplating; CHX3COOH\ce{CH3COOH} as solvent and vinegar; hexanedioic acid for nylon-6,6; sodium benzoate as food preservative; higher fatty acids for soaps and detergents.
