How we count: 7× asked means 7 past JEE Main questions in the PrepWiser bank needed that concept, and "last" is the latest year one appeared. ★ marks ideas asked 8 or more times.

Newton's law and superposition

Newton's law of gravitation
4× asked, last 2025
F=Gm1m2r2,G=6.67×10−11 N m2 kg−2F = \frac{G m_1 m_2}{r^2},\qquad G = 6.67\times10^{-11}\ \text{N m}^2\,\text{kg}^{-2}
Point or spherically symmetric masses, rr between centres; attractive, along that line. Other shapes attract too: integrate.
  • Rod of mass MM, length LL, with mm on its axis at distance dd from the near end: integrating gives F=GMm/[d(d+L)]F=GMm/[d(d+L)], not GMm/(d+L/2)2GMm/(d+L/2)^2.
  • Not unchanged when mass moves from one body to the other. F∝m1m2F\propto m_1m_2, not the sum. For a fixed total the product is largest for equal masses: a transfer that narrows the gap raises FF, one that widens it lowers FF.
Superposition of point masses
5× asked, last 2026
F⃗net=∑iGm miri2 r^i\vec F_{\text{net}} = \sum_i \frac{G m\,m_i}{r_i^2}\,\hat r_i
r^i\hat r_i points from mm towards mim_i. Add as vectors; other masses do not change any pair's force.
  • Not only the nearest mass. Include every mass. With masses placed symmetrically, cancel the sideways components first, then add the components along the line of symmetry.
  • Quick method. Pair masses first: the field at the centre from opposite corners is G∣m1−m2∣/r2G|m_1-m_2|/r^2 towards the heavier; equal masses on a regular polygon give zero. Square corner: (2+1/2) Gm2/a2(\sqrt2+1/2)\,Gm^2/a^2 along the diagonal.
Masses circling under mutual attraction
5× asked, last 2023
Gm2(2r)2=mv2r  ⇒  v=Gm4r,ω=Gm4r3\frac{G m^2}{(2r)^2} = \frac{m v^2}{r}\;\Rightarrow\; v=\sqrt{\frac{Gm}{4r}},\qquad \omega=\sqrt{\frac{Gm}{4r^3}}
Two equal masses on a circle of radius rr. Four equal masses MM (a square): v2=(22+1)GM/4Rv^2=(2\sqrt2+1)GM/4R.
  • Three equal masses mm at the corners of an equilateral triangle of side aa: each is pulled 3 Gm2/a2\sqrt3\,Gm^2/a^2 to the centre and circles at radius a/3a/\sqrt3, so v=Gm/av=\sqrt{Gm/a}.
  • Not rr as the separation. The masses are a diameter apart, so Newton's law uses (2r)2(2r)^2 while mv2/rmv^2/r uses rr. On a circle of radius RR, a square's side is 2R\sqrt2R and its diagonal 2R2R.
Binary stars
2× asked, last 2021
ω2=G(m1+m2)d3,r1=m2 dm1+m2\omega^2=\frac{G(m_1+m_2)}{d^3},\qquad r_1=\frac{m_2\,d}{m_1+m_2}
Separation dd. Both circle the centre of mass with the same ω\omega and TT; the heavier star has the smaller circle.
COM2m2mmm
Both circle the common COM with one ω\omega; the heavier star on the smaller circle
  • Not ω/2π\omega/2\pi or 1/2πω1/2\pi\omega for the period. T=2π/ωT=2\pi/\omega. Check units: Gm/d3\sqrt{Gm/d^3} is already in s⁻¹, so it is ω\omega, not a time.
Ring on its axis
2× asked, last 2021
E=GMx(R2+x2)3/2,V=−GMR2+x2E=\frac{GMx}{(R^2+x^2)^{3/2}},\qquad V=-\frac{GM}{\sqrt{R^2+x^2}}
Ring radius RR, xx on the axis from its centre. EE points to the centre, is zero there and largest at x=R/2x=R/\sqrt2.
xxEEOR2\frac{R}{\sqrt2}2R2Rlargest
Zero at the centre, largest at x=R/2x=R/\sqrt2, then falls off
  • A uniform sphere on the ring's axis acts as a point mass at the sphere's centre.
Arc at its centre
1× asked, last 2024
F=2GmλRsin⁡ϕ2,λ=MRϕF=\frac{2Gm\lambda}{R}\sin\frac{\phi}{2},\qquad \lambda=\frac{M}{R\phi}
Arc angle ϕ\phi in radians. Semicircle: 2Gmλ/R2Gm\lambda/R; full ring: zero at the centre.
  • Not GMm/R2GMm/R^2 for a semicircle. The pieces pull at different angles and the sideways parts cancel; only 2/π2/\pi of it survives. A wire of length LL bent into a semicircle has R=L/πR=L/\pi.
Sphere with a cavity
2× asked, last 2025
F=Ffull−Fremoved,Mremoved=M(rR)3F = F_{\text{full}} - F_{\text{removed}},\qquad M_{\text{removed}} = M\left(\frac{r}{R}\right)^3
Uniform sphere: radius RR, uncut mass MM. Cavity radius rr: its mass acts as a point at its centre, at its distance from mm.
  • Inside the cavity the field is uniform: size (4/3)πGρd(4/3)\pi G\rho d, pointing from the cavity's centre towards the sphere's centre; dd = distance between the centres.
  • Not M(r/R)3M(r/R)^3 when the given MM is the mass left after cutting. Then Mremoved=Mr3/(R3−r3)M_{\text{removed}}=Mr^3/(R^3-r^3), e.g. M/7M/7, not M/8M/8, for r=R/2r=R/2.
