Answer and solution
Answer (c) NaNi₅
Solution

Hydrogen is stored inside a metal lattice, so look for the alloy that forms an interstitial hydride.
- What storage needs. A good storage material must soak up a lot of H₂ and give it back easily on warming. Metals and alloys that form interstitial (metallic) hydrides do this. The small H atoms fit into gaps in the metal lattice.
- The NCERT examples. Alloy hydrides such as NaNi₅, Ti-TiH₂ and Mg-MgH₂ are used to store hydrogen in small quantities. They hold more hydrogen in a given volume than the compressed gas does.
Option What it is Reversible H₂ store? SiH₄ Covalent (molecular) hydride, a gas No Li/P₄ A metal with white phosphorus, not a hydride system No NaNi₅ Alloy that forms an interstitial hydride Yes DIBAL-H Organic reducing agent No - So. NaNi₅ takes up hydrogen into its lattice and releases it again, so it improves a hydrogen storage tank. The answer is (c).
The idea to keep. For hydrogen storage, think of alloy (interstitial) hydrides such as NaNi₅, Ti-TiH₂ and Mg-MgH₂. They absorb H₂ and release it again on demand.
