JEE Main 2022 · 24 June · morning · Single correct · +4 / −1
The highest industrial consumption of molecular hydrogen is to produce compounds of element :
- (a) Carbon
- (b) Nitrogen
- (c) Oxygen
- (d) Chlorine
Answer and solution
Answer (b) Nitrogen
Solution
Chemistry ma’am · 3 steps
Think of the Haber process: most industrial hydrogen ends up in ammonia, a nitrogen compound.
- Biggest single use. The largest single use of dihydrogen is making ammonia by the Haber process: N₂ + 3H₂ ⇌ 2NH₃. This uses roughly half of all hydrogen produced in industry.
Industrial use of H₂ Product Element whose compound forms Scale Haber process NH₃, then HNO₃ and fertilisers Nitrogen largest Methanol synthesis, hydrogenation of oils CH₃OH, vanaspati ghee Carbon smaller Burning with chlorine HCl Chlorine smaller Rocket fuel, fuel cells H₂O Oxygen small - Why ammonia wins. Ammonia feeds the huge fertiliser industry (urea, ammonium salts) and the manufacture of nitric acid. No other use of hydrogen comes close in volume.
- So. Most industrial hydrogen goes into compounds of nitrogen, option (b).
The idea to keep. For uses of dihydrogen, remember the order: ammonia (Haber process) first by far, then methanol and hydrogenation of oils, then HCl and fuels.
