Match List - I with List - II
Choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below :
| List - I (process) | List - II (catalyst) | ||
|---|---|---|---|
| (a) | Deacron's process | (i) | ZSM-5 |
| (b) | Contact process | (ii) | CuCl₂ |
| (c) | Cracking of hydrocarbons | (iii) | Particles 'Ni' |
| (d) | Hydrogenation of vegetable oils | (iv) | V₂O₅ |
- (a) (a)-(ii), (b)-(iv), (c)-(i), (d)-(iii)
- (b) (a)-(i), (b)-(iii), (c)-(ii), (d)-(iv)
- (c) (a)-(iii), (b)-(i), (c)-(iv), (d)-(ii)
- (d) (a)-(iv), (b)-(ii), (c)-(i), (d)-(iii)
Answer and solution
Answer (a) (a)-(ii), (b)-(iv), (c)-(i), (d)-(iii)
Solution
Chemistry ma’am · 3 steps
Tie each process to the reaction it runs, and the catalyst follows from the reaction.
- Make chlorine. Deacon's process oxidises HCl with air to give chlorine: 4HCl + O₂ → 2Cl₂ + 2H₂O. It uses CuCl₂ as the catalyst.
- The other three. The contact process oxidises SO₂ to SO₃ for sulphuric acid over V₂O₅. Cracking and other petroleum reactions use the shape-selective zeolite ZSM-5. Vegetable oils are hardened into ghee with H₂ over finely divided nickel.
Process Reaction Catalyst (a) Deacon's process 4HCl + O₂ → 2Cl₂ + 2H₂O (ii) CuCl₂ (b) Contact process 2SO₂ + O₂ → 2SO₃ (iv) V₂O₅ (c) Cracking of hydrocarbons large hydrocarbons into smaller ones (i) ZSM-5 (d) Hydrogenation of oils C=C + H₂ → CH-CH in the oil (iii) Ni particles - So. The matching is (a)-(ii), (b)-(iv), (c)-(i), (d)-(iii), which is option (a).
The idea to keep. Learn industrial catalysts as pairs with their reactions: Deacon with CuCl₂, contact with V₂O₅, Haber with Fe, hydrogenation with Ni, petroleum with ZSM-5.
