Match the List-I with List-II
Choose the correct answer from the options given below :

List-I Chloro derivativeList-II Example
A. Vinyl ChlorideI. CH₂ = CH - CH₂Cl
B. Benzyl ChlorideII. CH₃ - CH(Cl)CH₃
C. Alkyl ChlorideIII. CH₂ = CHCl
D. Allyl ChlorideIV.
  1. (a) A-III, B-IV, C-I, D-II
  2. (b) A-IV, B-I, C-III, D-II
  3. (c) A-III, B-IV, C-II, D-I
  4. (d) A-I, B-II, C-IV, D-III
Answer and solution

Answer (c) A-III, B-IV, C-II, D-I

Find the carbon holding Cl, then check its neighbour: a C=C, a benzene ring, or neither.

  1. Where Cl sits. In a vinyl halide, Cl is on an sp² carbon of the C=C itself. In an allyl halide, Cl is on the sp³ carbon next to a C=C. In a benzyl halide, Cl is on the sp³ carbon next to a benzene ring. An alkyl halide has no double bond or ring nearby.
  2. Read structure IV. The figure is C₆H₅-CH(Cl)-CH₃. The Cl is on an sp³ carbon joined directly to the ring, so it is benzylic. Being a secondary carbon does not change that.
    ExampleCarbon carrying ClType
    I. CH₂=CH-CH₂Clsp³, next to C=Callyl (D)
    II. CH₃-CH(Cl)-CH₃sp³, no C=C or ringalkyl (C)
    III. CH₂=CHClsp², part of C=Cvinyl (A)
IV. C₆H₅-CH(Cl)-CH₃sp³, next to benzene ringbenzyl (B)
  3. So. The match is A-III, B-IV, C-II, D-I, which is option (c).

The idea to keep. Vinyl and aryl: Cl is on the sp² carbon itself. Allyl and benzyl: Cl is on the sp³ carbon next to the C=C or ring. Alkyl: no π system nearby.
