JEE Main 2022 · 25 July · evening · Single correct · +4 / −1
Given below are two statements.
Statement I : Pig iron is obtained by heating cast iron with scrap iron.
Statement II : Pig iron has a relatively lower carbon content than that of cast iron.
In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below.
- (a) Both Statement I and Statement II are correct.
- (b) Both Statement I and Statement II are not correct.
- (c) Statement I is correct but Statement II is not correct.
- (d) Statement I is not correct but Statement II is correct.
Answer and solution
Answer (b) Both Statement I and Statement II are not correct.
Solution
Chemistry ma’am · 3 steps
Pig iron comes first from the blast furnace; cast iron is made from it, so both statements run backwards.
- Pig iron first. Iron that comes out of the blast furnace is pig iron. It has about 4% carbon, plus small amounts of S, P, Si and Mn.
- Then cast iron. Cast iron is made by melting pig iron with scrap iron and coke under a hot air blast. Some carbon burns off, so cast iron has slightly less carbon, about 3%.
Property Pig iron Cast iron How it is made Directly from the blast furnace Pig iron heated with scrap iron and coke Carbon content About 4%, higher About 3%, lower - So. Statement I swaps the two irons, and Statement II gets the carbon order backwards. Neither is correct, so the answer is (b).
The idea to keep. Follow the order of making: blast furnace gives pig iron (about 4% C), and remelting it with scrap iron and coke gives cast iron (about 3% C). Each refining step lowers the carbon, down to wrought iron.
