JEE Main 2025 · 3 April · evening · Single correct · +4 / −1
Given below are two statements:
Statement I : Wet cotton clothes made of cellulose based carbohydrate takes comparatively longer time to get dried than wet nylon polymer based clothes.
Statement II : Intermolecular hydrogen bonding with water molecule is more in nylon-based clothes than in the case of cotton clothes.
In the light of above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below
- (a) Both Statement I and Statement II are false
- (b) Both Statement I and Statement II are true
- (c) Statement I is false but Statement II is true
- (d) Statement I is true but Statement II is false
Answer and solution
Answer (d) Statement I is true but Statement II is false
Solution
Chemistry ma’am · 3 steps
Look at what each fibre offers water: cellulose is full of OH groups, nylon has far fewer sites.
- Cotton is cellulose. Cellulose is a long chain of glucose units, and each unit carries three free -OH groups. Every one of them can form hydrogen bonds with water molecules.
- Nylon is a polyamide. Nylon chains are mostly -CH₂⁻ stretches, with only an occasional amide group -CO-NH⁻. These amide groups also hydrogen bond strongly with each other, chain to chain, so even fewer are free to bond with water.
Statement What it claims Check Verdict I Cotton dries slower than nylon Cotton holds water through many hydrogen bonds, so it takes longer to evaporate True II Nylon hydrogen bonds more with water Nylon has far fewer free sites than cellulose, so it bonds less with water False - So. Statement I is true and Statement II is false, which is option (d).
The idea to keep. Count the free -OH and -NH groups on a material. More of them means more hydrogen bonds with water, so it absorbs more and dries more slowly.
