The strain-stress plot for materials A,B,C and D is shown in the figure. Which material has the largest Young's modulus ?
- (a) B
- (b) A
- (c) D
- (d) C
Answer and solution
Answer (d) C

Check the axes first: strain is on the y-axis here, so the slope is 1/Y and the flattest line wins.
- What Y means. Young's modulus is stress divided by strain, Y = stress/strain. A large Y means the material stretches very little for a given stress.
- Read the slope. In this graph strain is on the vertical axis and stress is on the horizontal axis. So the slope of each line is strain over stress, which is the reciprocal of Y.
slope = strain/stress = 1/Y
- Compare the lines. The slopes decrease in the order A > B > D > C. A smaller slope means a larger Y, so the order of Young's modulus is C > D > B > A.
- So. Line C is the flattest, so material C has the largest Young's modulus, option (d).
The idea to keep. On any elasticity graph, look at which quantity sits on which axis before judging slopes. Stress vs strain gives slope Y; strain vs stress gives slope 1/Y.
