How we count: 7× asked means 7 past JEE Main questions in the PrepWiser bank needed that formula, and "last" is the latest year one appeared. ★ marks formulas asked 8 or more times.

Sound as a longitudinal wave

Displacement and pressure waves
Δp=−B∂s∂x,P0=Bks0=ρvωs0\Delta p=-B\frac{\partial s}{\partial x},\qquad P_0=Bks_0=\rho v\omega s_0
ss = displacement, BB = bulk modulus. Δp\Delta p is 90∘90^\circ out of phase with ss: largest where s=0s=0.
Nodes at the ends of a pipe
closed end: displacement node,open end: pressure node\text{closed end: displacement node},\quad \text{open end: pressure node}
Closed end is a pressure antinode; open end a displacement antinode.
Echo
t=2dv,dmin⁡=v (0.1 s)2≈17 mt=\frac{2d}v,\qquad d_{\min}=\frac{v\,(0.1\ \text{s})}2\approx17\ \text{m}
Ear holds a sound about 0.1 s. Audible 20 Hz – 20 kHz.
