How we count: 7× asked means 7 past JEE Main questions in the PrepWiser bank needed that concept, and "last" is the latest year one appeared. ★ marks ideas asked 8 or more times.

Matter, measurement and laws

Dalton's theory and laws of combination
Dalton: atoms are indivisible, identical within an element, combine in whole-number ratios and are only rearranged.
HX2\ce{H2}HX2\ce{H2}++OX2\ce{O2}→\rightarrowsteamsteamsame TT and pp: equal volumes hold equal numbers of molecules
Gay-Lussac: 2 vol HX2\ce{H2} + 1 vol OX2\ce{O2} give 2 vol steam
  • Element: one kind of atom; compound: fixed mass ratio; mixture: any ratio. Mass is conserved (Lavoisier); a compound's mass ratio is fixed (Proust); HX2O\ce{H2O} and HX2OX2\ce{H2O2} hold 16 and 32 g O per 2 g H (multiple proportions).
  • At the same T and P, gases react in simple volume ratios (Gay-Lussac: 2 vol HX2\ce{H2} + 1 vol OX2\ce{O2} → 2 vol steam) and equal volumes hold equal numbers of molecules (Avogadro). Dalton's theory could not explain the volume law.
SI units, precision and accuracy
2× asked, last 2025
SI base units: m, kg, s, A, K, mol, cd. 1 cd: light of 540×1012540\times10^{12} Hz with radiant intensity 1/6831/683 W sr⁻¹.
precise,not accuratepreciseand accurateneither
Centre = true value. Precision: readings agree; accuracy: they hit the true value
  • Mass is the amount of matter and never changes; weight =mg=mg is a force. Precision: readings agree with each other; accuracy: they agree with the true value. Kelvin temperatures are never negative.
  • Significant figures: non-zero digits and zeros between them count; leading zeros never (0.0052 has 2); trailing zeros only with a decimal point (100 has 1, 100.0 has 4, 1.00×1021.00\times10^2 has 3). Exact counts: unlimited.
  • × and ÷: keep the fewest significant figures; + and −: keep the fewest decimal places. Rounding off: a dropped digit above 5 raises the last kept digit; exactly 5 raises it only if it is odd (4.335 → 4.34, 4.345 → 4.34).
