JEE Main 2023 · 8 April · evening · Single correct · +4 / −1

In photo electric effect
A. The photocurrent is proportional to the intensity of the incident radiation
B. Maximum Kinetic energy with which photoelectrons are emitted depends on the intensity of incident light.
C. Max. K.E with which photoelectrons are emitted depends on the frequency of incident light.
D. The emission of photoelectrons require a minimum threshold intensity of incident radiation.
E. Max. K.E of the photoelectrons is independent of the frequency of the incident light.
Choose the correct answer from the options given below:

  1. (a) A and E only
  2. (b) A and B only
  3. (c) B and C only
  4. (d) A and C only
Answer and solution

Answer (d) A and C only

Intensity decides how many electrons come out; frequency decides how fast the fastest one moves.

  1. Intensity sets the count. Higher intensity means more photons arrive each second. Each photon frees at most one electron, so more electrons come out and the photocurrent rises in proportion. A is true.
  2. Frequency sets the energy. One electron absorbs one photon of energy hν. Whatever is left after paying the work function becomes kinetic energy, so the maximum kinetic energy depends on frequency and not on intensity.

    Kₘₐₓ = hν - φ₀

    StatementVerdictReason
ATruemore photons per second, more electrons per second
BFalseintensity does not appear in Kₘₐₓ = hν - φ₀
    CTrueKₘₐₓ rises linearly with ν
DFalsethere is a threshold frequency, not a threshold intensity
EFalsecontradicts Kₘₐₓ = hν - φ₀
  3. So. Only A and C are correct, which is option (d).

The idea to keep. Photoelectric effect is one photon to one electron. Intensity changes the number of photons, so it changes the current. Frequency changes each photon's energy, so it changes Kₘₐₓ.
