Number of σ and π bonds present in ethylene molecule is respectively :
- (a) 3 and 1
- (b) 5 and 1
- (c) 4 and 1
- (d) 5 and 2
Answer and solution
Answer (b) 5 and 1
Solution
Chemistry ma’am · 4 steps
Draw ethylene fully, count every single bond as one sigma, then add the extra bond inside the double bond.
- Draw the structure. Ethylene is H₂C=CH₂. Each carbon holds two hydrogens, and the two carbons are joined by a double bond.
- Count sigma bonds. Every bond between two atoms has exactly one σ bond. There are four C-H bonds and one C-C link, so 4 + 1 = 5 σ bonds.
- Count pi bonds. A double bond is one σ plus one π. Ethylene has only the one C=C double bond, so it has 1 π bond.
- So. Ethylene has 5 σ bonds and 1 π bond, which is option (b).
The idea to keep. Every bond between two atoms gives one σ. A double bond adds one π, a triple bond adds two. Count the bonds first, then the extras.
