JEE Main 2022 · 27 June · morning · Single correct · +4 / −1

The susceptibility of a paramagnetic material is 99. The permeability of the material in Wb/A-m, is :
[Permeability of free space μ₀ = 4π × 10⁻⁷ Wb/A-m]

  1. (a) 4π × 10⁻⁷
  2. (b) 4π × 10⁻⁴
  3. (c) 4π × 10⁻⁵
  4. (d) 4π × 10⁻⁶
Answer and solution

Answer (c) 4π × 10⁻⁵

Add 1 to the susceptibility to get the relative permeability, then multiply by μ₀.

  1. Relative permeability. Susceptibility χ and relative permeability μᵣ are linked by μᵣ = 1 + χ. Here μᵣ = 1 + 99 = 100.

    μ = μ₀ μᵣ = μ₀ (1 + χ)

  2. Put in numbers. μ = 4π × 10⁻⁷ × 100 = 4π × 10⁻⁵ Wb A⁻¹ m⁻¹.
  3. So. The permeability of the material is 4π × 10⁻⁵ Wb A⁻¹ m⁻¹, which is option (c).

The idea to keep. Susceptibility tells you how much extra the material adds. Relative permeability is 1 + χ, and the actual permeability is μ₀ times that.
