Paramagnetic substances:
A. align themselves along the directions of external magnetic field.
B. attract strongly towards external magnetic field.
C. has susceptibility little more than zero.
D. move from a region of strong magnetic field to weak magnetic field.
Choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below:

  1. (a) A, B, C Only
  2. (b) A, C Only
  3. (c) A, B, C, D
  4. (d) B, D Only
Answer and solution

Answer (b) A, C Only

Paramagnets respond only weakly to a field: they line up with it and get pulled gently, never strongly.

  1. What paramagnets are. Each atom carries a small permanent magnetic moment. With no field the moments point randomly; an external field turns them partly along itself, so the material gets a weak magnetisation in the direction of the field.
    StatementTrue for paramagnets?Reason
A: align along the fieldYesThe atomic moments, and a paramagnetic rod, turn along B⃗
B: attracted stronglyNoThe pull is weak. Strong attraction is the mark of a ferromagnet
C: susceptibility a little more than zeroYesχ is small and positive, about 10⁻⁵ to 10⁻³
D: move from strong to weak fieldNoThat is diamagnetic behaviour. Paramagnets move from weak to strong field
  2. So. Only A and C are correct, which is option (b).

The idea to keep. Sort by χ: diamagnetic is small negative and moves to weaker field, paramagnetic is small positive and is pulled weakly to stronger field, ferromagnetic is large positive and is pulled strongly.
