For electrons in ' 2 s ' and ' 2 p ' orbitals, the orbital angular momentum values, respectively are:
- (a) 0 and √6 h/(2 π)
- (b) 0 and √2 h/(2 π)
- (c) √2 h/(2 π) and 0
- (d) h/(2 π) and √2 h/(2 π)
Answer and solution
Answer (b) 0 and √2 h/(2 π)

Orbital angular momentum depends only on l, so find l for each orbital and use √l(l+1).
- The formula. The orbital angular momentum of an electron is set by the azimuthal quantum number l, not by n.
L = √l(l+1) h/2π
- 2s electron. An s orbital has l = 0, so L = √(0 × 1) h/2π = 0.
- 2p electron. A p orbital has l = 1, so L = √(1 × 2) h/2π = √2 h/2π.
- So. The values are 0 and √2 h/2π, which is option (b).
The idea to keep. Orbital angular momentum is √l(l+1) h/2π. It uses l only: every s electron gives 0, every p gives √2, every d gives √6, whatever the value of n.
