The metal that has very low melting point and its periodic position is closer to a metalloid is :
- (a) Al
- (b) Ga
- (c) Se
- (d) In
Answer and solution
Answer (b) Ga
Solution
Chemistry ma’am · 3 steps
Gallium melts at about 30 °C, so it melts in your palm, and it sits right next to germanium.
- Two conditions. The answer must be a metal. It must have a very low melting point, and it must sit beside a metalloid in the periodic table.
Element Type Melting point Position Al metal 660 °C, high group 13, beside Si Ga metal 29.8 °C, very low group 13, period 4, beside Ge In metal 157 °C, low group 13, beside Sn (a metal) Se non-metal 221 °C group 16 - Why gallium is odd. In solid gallium the atoms pair up into Ga₂ units. This structure breaks apart easily, so gallium melts just above room temperature but stays liquid up to about 2200 °C.
- So. Only gallium meets both conditions: it is a metal, it melts at about 30 °C, and it sits next to germanium, a metalloid. The answer is (b).
The idea to keep. Remember gallium as the group 13 oddity: it melts at about 30 °C and boils above 2200 °C, so it has the widest liquid range of any element. That is why it is used in high-temperature thermometers.
