Identify the correct statements about p-block elements and their compounds.
(A) Non metals have higher electronegativity than metals.
(B) Non metals have lower ionisation enthalpy than metals.
(C) Compounds formed between highly reactive nonmetals and highly reactive metals are generally ionic.
(D) The non-metal oxides are generally basic in nature.
(E) The metal oxides are generally acidic or neutral in nature.
Choose the correct answer from the options given below :
- (a) (B) and (D) only
- (b) (B) and (E) only
- (c) (D) and (E) only
- (d) (A) and (C) only
Answer and solution
Answer (d) (A) and (C) only
Solution

Non-metals want electrons, metals give them away; check each statement against that one picture.
- The core contrast. Non-metals sit on the right of the periodic table and hold on to electrons tightly. Metals sit on the left and lose electrons easily. Every statement here is a test of that difference.
Statement What is actually true Verdict (A) Non-metals have higher electronegativity Non-metals attract bonding electrons strongly, for example F 4.0 against Na 0.9 Correct (B) Non-metals have lower ionisation enthalpy Non-metals have higher ionisation enthalpy, which is why they do not lose electrons easily Wrong (C) Reactive metal + reactive non-metal gives ionic compounds The large electronegativity difference transfers electrons fully, as in NaCl and CsF Correct (D) Non-metal oxides are basic They are acidic, for example SO₃ and P₄O₁₀, or neutral, for example CO and N₂O Wrong (E) Metal oxides are acidic or neutral They are basic, for example Na₂O and CaO Wrong - Oxides swapped. Statements (D) and (E) describe the two kinds of oxide the wrong way round. A metal oxide forms a base in water. A non-metal oxide forms an acid in water, or does not react at all.
- So. Only (A) and (C) are correct, which is option (d).
The idea to keep. Going left to right, metallic character falls while ionisation enthalpy, electronegativity and the acidity of the oxides all rise. Metal oxides are basic and non-metal oxides are acidic.
