JEE Main 2024 · 1 February · evening · Single correct · +4 / −1
Given below are two statements :
Statement (I) : Both metals and non-metals exist in p and d-block elements.
Statement (II) : Non-metals have higher ionisation enthalpy and higher electronegativity than the metals.
In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below :
- (a) Both Statement I and Statement II are false
- (b) Both Statement I and Statement II are true
- (c) Statement I is false but Statement II is true
- (d) Statement I is true but Statement II is false
Answer and solution
Answer (c) Statement I is false but Statement II is true
Solution
Chemistry ma’am · 4 steps
The p-block has both metals and non-metals, but every d-block element is a metal. That sinks Statement I.
- The p-block. The p-block has all three kinds of element. Carbon, nitrogen, oxygen and the halogens are non-metals, silicon and arsenic are metalloids, and aluminium, tin and lead are metals.
- The d-block. Every d-block element is a transition metal. Even mercury, a liquid, is a metal. There is no non-metal in the d-block, so Statement I is false.
- Metal versus non-metal. Metals lose electrons easily to form cations, so they have low ionisation enthalpy and low electronegativity. Non-metals hold their electrons tightly and attract more, so both values are higher. Statement II is true.
- So. Statement I is false and Statement II is true, which is option (c).
The idea to keep. The s- and d-blocks are metals only. Only the p-block mixes metals, metalloids and non-metals. Non-metallic character goes with high ionisation enthalpy and high electronegativity.
