Match the LIST-I with LIST-II
Choose the correct answer from the options given below:
| List - I | List - II | ||
|---|---|---|---|
| Compound | Test | ||
| A. | I. | Hinsberg's reagent test | |
| B. | II. | Phthalein dye test | |
| C. | III. | Lucas test | |
| D. | IV. | Tollen’s test |
- (a) A-III, B-I, C-IV, D-II
- (b) A-III, B-IV, C-I, D-II
- (c) A-I, B-III, C-II, D-IV
- (d) A-I, B-II, C-III, D-IV
Answer and solution
Answer (a) A-III, B-I, C-IV, D-II
Solution
Chemistry ma’am · 3 steps
Name the functional group first, then pick the test built to detect that group.
- Spot the groups. A is cyclohexanol, a secondary alcohol. B is cyclohexylamine, a primary amine. C is cyclohexanecarbaldehyde, an aldehyde. D is phenol.
Compound Functional group Test What you see A, cyclohexanol 2° alcohol Lucas test (III) Turbidity in about 5 minutes with ZnCl₂/conc. HCl B, cyclohexylamine 1° amine Hinsberg's test (I) Sulphonamide that dissolves in KOH C, cyclohexanecarbaldehyde aldehyde, -CHO Tollens' test (IV) Silver mirror D, phenol phenolic -OH Phthalein dye test (II) Pink colour in NaOH after heating with phthalic anhydride and conc. H₂SO₄ - Why these pairs. Lucas reagent tells alcohols apart by how fast they form a carbocation. Hinsberg's reagent, benzenesulphonyl chloride, reacts with the N–H of amines. Tollens' reagent is reduced only by an easily oxidised -CHO. The phthalein test needs an activated aromatic ring, which phenol has and cyclohexanol does not.
- So. The match is A-III, B-I, C-IV, D-II, which is option (a).
The idea to keep. Lucas is for alcohols, Hinsberg for amines, Tollens for aldehydes, and the phthalein dye test for phenols. Read the group off the structure and the test follows.
