Do JEE Main questions repeat?
About 1 in 6 questions from 2021 on (about 18%) repeated an earlier year's question: about 120 near-identical and about 1,900 with new numbers. Counting questions that tested an earlier concept through a different question (a looser, estimated match), about 39%. Within the same year, about 8% of the questions in a later session (April after January, say) repeated a question from that year's earlier session: about 33 near-identical and about 500 with new numbers. Counting the concept level too, about 21%.
- Near-identical:
- about 120, questions, the same as one from an earlier year (between about 94 and about 160)
- New numbers:
- about 1,900, more, an earlier pattern with new values (between about 1,600 and about 2,100)
- Same concept:
- about 2,300, more, an earlier idea in a different question (between about 1,900 and about 2,600)
For scale: about 97% of the questions from 2021 on came from a chapter topic already asked in an earlier year, so "the topic repeated" says almost nothing. That is why we count at the level of the question, the pattern and the concept.
The 549 most repeated JEE Main questions (free PDF)
Each one is a question pattern that JEE Main asked in two or more shifts from 2020 to 2026, near-identical or with new numbers, ranked by how many shifts asked it (see how we counted).
The PDFs print the latest version of each question, with every shift it was asked in, an answer key at the end and a link to its step-by-step solution online. Free, no login. Physics has 290 of them, Mathematics 173 and Chemistry 86. Chemistry questions come back as the same question or pattern less often (about 12% of its questions from 2021 on, against about 25% in Physics and about 18% in Mathematics), so it has fewer.

Times asked: how many different shifts from 2020 to 2026 asked the pattern, near-identical or with new numbers. Ties go to the pattern asked more recently, then in more years. The top twenty are shown here; the PDFs and the CSV have all of them. One pattern with no question we can print (held, or a figure we may not show) is left out.
Three kinds of repeat, counted apart
- Near-identical. The same question asked again: the same setup, the same given values and the same thing asked. Only the wording, letter names, the order of the options or the answer format (options or a typed number) changed.
- Same pattern, new numbers. The same setup and the same thing asked, solved step by step the same way, with different values (or a small change in the final ask).
- Same concept, different question. The setup or the thing asked is different, so it is not a renumbered copy, but both questions turn on the same core principle and the same key step: for example, two different rolling questions that both come down to taking torque about the point of contact. Sharing a chapter or a topic is not enough.
A question that matches an earlier one in more than one way is counted once, under its closest match. The counts combine pairs matched one by one with estimates from checked samples (see how we counted), so they are approximate.
Other published figures differ because the definitions differ: Competishun's analysis of 12,018 questions from 2019 to 2026 (published 27 Oct 2026) counts about 64% as repeats of a broader "pattern", grouping questions with the same concept and working by a method it does not publish, while we count a question only when an earlier year had it near-identical or with new numbers (about 18%), or about 39% with the concept level.
How many of each year's questions repeat an earlier year
near-identical same pattern, new numbers same concept (estimate)
| Year | Questionsin our bank | Repeated an earlier year's questionshare near-identical or new numbers; hatched: same concept, estimated | Near-identical | New numbers | Same conceptestimate |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2020 | 1172 | First year in our bank: nothing earlier to compare with | |||
| 2021 | 2277 | 6% | 2 | 140 | 350 |
| 2022 | 2019 | 15% | 30 | 270 | 370 |

| 2026 | 1425 | 23% | 19 | 310 | 290 |
Counts are rounded. Matched questions are counted one by one; the rest are estimated from checked samples, so every cell is approximate and the yearly concept figures are the roughest. Later years have more earlier papers in our bank to repeat from, so the shares are not a trend on their own.
Where repeats concentrate
By subject, about 25% of Physics, about 18% of Mathematics, about 12% of Chemistry questions from 2021 to 2026 were near-identical or new-numbers repeats of an earlier year. At the concept level, the estimate adds about 24% in Physics, about 19% in Chemistry, about 18% in Mathematics. The chapters with the highest share of near-identical and new-numbers repeats:
| Chapter | Near-identical or new numbersshare of its 2021 to 2026 questions | Repeats | Questions2021 to 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Experimental SkillsPhysics | 27.5% | 14 | 51 |
| Purification & Characterisation of Organic CompoundsChemistry | 24.2% | 29 | 120 |
| Surface TensionPhysics | 21.7% | 10 | 46 |

| Dual Nature of Radiation & MatterPhysics | 17.4% | 23 | 132 |
| DeterminantsMathematics | 16.5% | 27 | 164 |
| Fluid MechanicsPhysics | 14.5% | 11 | 76 |
| Three Dimensional GeometryMathematics | 14.4% | 40 | 278 |
| Electromagnetic WavesPhysics | 14.3% | 17 | 119 |
| ElasticityPhysics | 13.3% | 12 | 90 |
Chapters with forty or more questions from 2021 on and five or more such repeats, ranked by share. These count only the pairs we matched one by one, so the shares are a floor. Chapter names link to their free PYQ PDFs. The concept estimate is too rough to rank single chapters, so it is shown by subject only.
Within the same year: a later session against an earlier one
This compares each later session with the earlier session or sessions of the same year only (6,649 questions from later sessions), so the pool of earlier questions is much smaller than in the year-to-year count above. Of these, about 8% were near-identical or new-numbers repeats of that year's earlier session, and about 13% more repeated its concept.
| Year | Sessionsin our bank | Questionsin later sessions | Near-identical | New numbers |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2020 | January, September | 728 | 0 | 9 |
| 2021 | February, March, July, August | 1753 | 17 | 150 |
| 2022 | June, July | 877 | 1 | 90 |
| 2023 | January, April | 1050 | 12 | 65 |
| 2024 | January, April | 894 | 3 | 110 |
| 2025 | January, April | 672 | 0 | 34 |
| 2026 | January, April | 675 | 0 | 42 |
Counts are rounded and partly estimated, as above. The same-concept estimate rests on a smaller sample here, so it is given only for all years together.
Example pairs, side by side
The earlier question is on the left (on top on phones). Stems are NTA's wording, without the options. For same-concept pairs, the line under the pair names the idea they share.

Every pair we counted, 1262 pairs, with question ids, years, shifts, chapter, kind, scope (earlier year or same year), similarity score and the label from each review and the second check, as a spreadsheet. Same-concept rows are the checked sample only, not every such pair.
Download the pairs (CSV)How we counted
- What we compared. Every JEE Main question in our bank with a recorded shift: 12,201 questions from 147 shifts, 2020 to 2026. 2020 is the first year we hold, so its questions can be matched by later ones but cannot repeat an earlier year. The year-to-year shares are out of the 2021 to 2026 questions.
- How the pairs were checked. Questions from different shifts were compared by their text and by their worked solutions. The candidate pairs were then checked in two independent reviews, plus a second check of the borderline ones. The reviews were AI-assisted. Where only a sample could be checked, it was scaled up to the whole and the counts come with a range. The two reviews agreed on about 87% of the pairs both checked.
- Data checks. No question was found entered twice inside one shift, so nothing was left out for that. Pairs from two shifts of the same session are in the CSV but not in any count above.
Limits
- Our bank covers 2020 to 2026 only. A question that repeats one from a paper before 2020 is not counted.
- A question decided by its figure, or a repeat filed under another chapter and worded differently, cannot be caught from the text, so the counts lean low.
- Where one concept ends and another begins is a judgment call, so read the same-concept numbers as approximate.
- A repeat here describes past papers only. It says nothing about which questions a future paper will ask.
Practise the past questions
The free chapter-wise PYQ PDFs carry each chapter's past questions with an answer key, and you can practise them online with no login.
Counted from PrepWiser's JEE Main question bank, 2020 to 2026 papers. Question text is NTA's.
