For reaction
The correct order of set of reagents for the above conversion is :
- (a) Ac₂O,Br₂,H₂O(Δ),NaOH
- (b) H₂SO₄,Ac₂O,Br₂,H₂O(Δ),NaOH
- (c) Br₂| FeBr₃,H₂O(Δ),NaOH
- (d) Ac₂O,H₂SO₄,Br₂,NaOH
Answer and solution
Answer (b) H₂SO₄,Ac₂O,Br₂,H₂O(Δ),NaOH

Block the para position with -SO₃H first, and bromine has nowhere to go but ortho.
- Block para. Aniline with H₂SO₄, on heating, gives sulphanilic acid. The -SO₃H group now sits at the para position, so that position is taken.
- Tame the ring. Ac₂O turns -NH₂ into -NHCOCH₃. This group still directs to ortho and para, but it activates the ring much less, so bromine adds only once instead of three times.
- Brominate ortho. With para blocked, Br₂ goes to a position ortho to -NHCOCH₃. You get one Br, placed next to the nitrogen.
- Remove helpers. Heating with water in acid hydrolyses the amide back to the amine. It also removes -SO₃H, because sulphonation is reversible. The amine comes out as its anilinium salt, and NaOH releases free o-bromoaniline.
- So. The order is block, protect, brominate, deprotect, neutralise: H₂SO₄, Ac₂O, Br₂, H₂O(Δ), NaOH. That is option (b).
The idea to keep. To put a group ortho on a strongly o/p-directing ring, block para with -SO₃H and remove it at the end. Acetylation stops an amine ring from multiple substitution.
