Reaction of ammonia with excess Cl₂ gives :
- (a) NH₄Cl and N₂
- (b) NH₄Cl and HCl
- (c) NCl₃ and HCl
- (d) NCl₃ and NH₄Cl
Answer and solution
Answer (c) NCl₃ and HCl
Solution
Chemistry ma’am · 4 steps
Ask which reactant is in excess: with chlorine left over, every H on nitrogen gets swapped for Cl.
- Two possible outcomes. Ammonia and chlorine give different products depending on which one is in excess. So first check which reagent is left over.
Condition Balanced reaction Products Excess NH₃ 8NH₃ + 3Cl₂ → 6NH₄Cl + N₂ NH₄Cl and N₂ Excess Cl₂ NH₃ + 3Cl₂ → NCl₃ + 3HCl NCl₃ and HCl - Excess chlorine. With plenty of Cl₂, all three H atoms on nitrogen are replaced by Cl, giving nitrogen trichloride, NCl₃, an explosive liquid. Each H removed leaves as HCl.
- Why no NH4Cl. NH₄Cl forms only when spare NH₃ is left to combine with HCl. Here the ammonia is used up by chlorine, so HCl stays as it is.
- So. Ammonia with excess chlorine gives NCl₃ and HCl, which is option (c).
The idea to keep. For NH₃ with Cl₂, excess ammonia gives NH₄Cl + N₂, and excess chlorine gives NCl₃ + HCl. NH₄Cl needs spare ammonia to form.
