Answer and solution
Answer (d) B, C and E only
Solution
Chemistry ma’am · 3 steps
Go through the batteries you know and pick out the metals that actually sit in their electrodes.
- Recall the cells. The standard batteries in your syllabus are the dry (Leclanché) cell, the mercury cell, the lead storage battery and the nickel–cadmium cell. Check which of the five metals appears in their electrodes.
Metal Where it appears Battery metal? Fe Not an electrode material in these standard cells No Mn MnO₂ at the cathode of the dry cell Yes Ni NiO(OH) at the cathode of the Ni–Cd cell Yes Cr Used in electroplating and stainless steel, not in battery electrodes No Cd Anode of the Ni–Cd cell Yes - Ni–Cd cell. In this rechargeable cell, cadmium is oxidised at the anode and nickel(III) is reduced at the cathode: Cd + 2Ni(OH)₃ → CdO + 2Ni(OH)₂ + H₂O.
- So. The battery metals are Mn, Ni and Cd, that is B, C and E only. The answer is (d).
The idea to keep. For battery questions, learn each cell by its two electrodes: dry cell is Zn and MnO₂, Ni–Cd is Cd and NiO(OH), lead storage is Pb and PbO₂. The metals come straight from these.
