For lead storage battery pick the correct statements
A. During charging of battery, PbSO₄ on anode is converted into PbO₂
B. During charging of battery, PbSO₄ on cathode is converted into PbO₂
C. Lead storage battery consists of grid of lead packed with PbO₂ as anode
D. Lead storage battery has ∼ 38 % solution of sulphuric acid as an electrolyte
Choose the correct answer from the options given below:
- (a) A, B, D only
- (b) B, C only
- (c) B, C, D only
- (d) B, D only
Answer and solution
Answer (d) B, D only
Solution
Chemistry ma’am · 4 steps
Write the two discharge half-reactions first. Charging runs both of them backwards.
- Set up the cell. The anode is a lead plate. The cathode is a grid of lead packed with PbO₂. Both dip in about 38% H₂SO₄, which has density about 1.3 g mL⁻¹.
- Discharge. At the anode, Pb + SO₄²⁻ → PbSO₄ + 2e⁻. At the cathode, PbO₂ + SO₄²⁻ + 4H⁺ + 2e⁻ → PbSO₄ + 2H₂O. So both plates end up coated with PbSO₄.
- Charging. Charging reverses both reactions. PbSO₄ on the anode goes back to Pb, and PbSO₄ on the cathode goes back to PbO₂. Here anode and cathode are the names used during discharge, as NCERT does.
Statement Check Verdict A PbSO₄ on the anode becomes Pb, not PbO₂ false B PbSO₄ on the cathode becomes PbO₂ true C The PbO₂-packed grid is the cathode, not the anode false D The electrolyte is about 38% H₂SO₄ true - So. Only B and D are correct, which is option (d).
The idea to keep. In the lead storage battery, Pb is the anode and PbO₂ is the cathode. Discharge turns both into PbSO₄, and charging gives each plate back its own starting material.
