JEE Main 2022 · 26 July · evening · Single correct · +4 / −1

Animal starch is the other name of

  1. (a) amylose.
  2. (b) maltose.
  3. (c) glycogen.
  4. (d) amylopectin.
Answer and solution

Answer (c) glycogen.

Solution

Chemistry ma’am · 3 steps

Glycogen is how animals store glucose, built like plant starch but even more branched.

  1. Storage polysaccharides. Plants store glucose as starch, which is a mix of amylose and amylopectin. Animals store glucose as glycogen, mainly in the liver, muscles and brain.
  2. Why animal starch. Glycogen has the same structure as amylopectin: chains of α-D-glucose joined by C1–C4 glycosidic links, with branches at C1–C6. It is more highly branched, and it plays the same storage role in animals that starch plays in plants. That is why it is called animal starch.
    OptionWhat it isFound in
Amyloseunbranched α-glucose chain, about 15–20% of starchplants
Maltosedisaccharide of two α-glucose unitsformed when starch is broken down
Glycogenvery highly branched α-glucose polymeranimals (liver, muscles, brain)
Amylopectinbranched α-glucose polymer, about 80–85% of starchplants
  3. So. Animal starch is glycogen, option (c).

The idea to keep. Starch is the plant's glucose store and glycogen is the animal's. Glycogen looks like amylopectin, only more branched, and that is why it is called animal starch.
