The incorrect statement about Glucose is :

  1. (a) Glucose remains in multiple isomeric form in its aqueous solution
  2. (b) Glucose is soluble in water because of having aldehyde functional group
  3. (c) Glucose is an aldohexose
  4. (d) Glucose is one of the monomer unit in sucrose
Answer and solution

Answer (b) Glucose is soluble in water because of having aldehyde functional group

Solution

Chemistry ma’am · 2 steps

Glucose dissolves because of its five OH groups, not because of one aldehyde group.

  1. Why it dissolves. Glucose, C₆H₁₂O₆, carries five -OH groups. Each one forms hydrogen bonds with water, and that is what makes glucose so soluble. In water almost all glucose is in the ring form, which has no free -CHO group at all.
    StatementCheckVerdict
    (a) Multiple isomeric forms in waterα and β ring forms interconvert through a small amount of open chain (mutarotation)correct
    (b) Soluble because of the aldehyde groupSolubility comes from hydrogen bonding of the five -OH groupsincorrect
    (c) AldohexoseSix carbons with a -CHO group at C1correct
    (d) Monomer in sucroseSucrose is α-D-glucose linked to β-D-fructosecorrect
  2. So. The incorrect statement is (b). The aldehyde group explains how glucose reacts, but its solubility comes from its hydroxyl groups.

The idea to keep. For sugars, solubility in water always comes from the many OH groups hydrogen bonding with water. Functional groups such as CHO decide reactions, not solubility.
