JEE Main 2025 · 3 April · evening · Single correct · +4 / −1
Given below are two statements:
Statement I : CrO₃ is a stronger oxidizing agent than MoO₃
Statement II : Cr(VI) is more stable than Mo(VI)
In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below
- (a) Statement I is true but Statement II is false
- (b) Both Statement I and Statement II are true
- (c) Both Statement I and Statement II are false
- (d) Statement I is false but Statement II is true
Answer and solution
Answer (a) Statement I is true but Statement II is false
Solution
Chemistry ma’am · 4 steps
Down group 6, the +6 state gets more stable, so Cr(VI) is the one eager to grab electrons.
- d-block trend. In a transition metal group, the highest oxidation state becomes more stable as you go down. This is the opposite of the p block, where the inert pair effect makes lower states more stable down the group.
- Statement II. Group 6 runs Cr, Mo, W, so Mo(VI) is more stable than Cr(VI). Statement II says the reverse, so it is false.
- Statement I. Because Cr(VI) is less stable, it readily gains electrons to reach the stable Cr(III) state. So CrO₃ is a strong oxidizing agent, while MoO₃ hardly acts as one. Statement I is true.
- So. Statement I is true and Statement II is false, which is option (a).
The idea to keep. In the d block, higher oxidation states grow more stable down a group (Cr < Mo < W for +6). The less stable high state is the stronger oxidizing agent.
