German silver is a trick name: it has no silver in it at all, just copper, zinc and nickel.
- What it is. German silver (also called nickel silver) is an alloy of three transition metals: copper, zinc and nickel. A typical composition is about 60% Cu, 20% Zn and 20% Ni.
- Why the name. Nickel gives the alloy a bright, silvery-white shine, so it looks like silver. That look is the only link to silver; there is no Ag in it.
Option Metals Matches German silver? (a) Zn, Ni, Ag No, has Ag and misses Cu (b) Cu, Zn, Ni Yes (c) Cu, Zn, Ag No, has Ag in place of Ni (d) Ge, Cu, Ag No, neither Ge nor Ag is present - So. The major components of German silver are Cu, Zn and Ni, which is option (b).
The idea to keep. Learn common alloys by their metals, not their names: German silver is Cu + Zn + Ni, brass is Cu + Zn, bronze is Cu + Sn. A name like silver tells you about the look, not the content.
