JEE Main 2021 · 26 February · morning · Single correct · +4 / −1
Match List - I with List - II.
Choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below :
| List - I (Ore) | List - II (Element Present) | ||
|---|---|---|---|
| (a) | Kernite | (i) | Tin |
| (b) | Cassiterite | (ii) | Boron |
| (c) | Calamine | (iii) | Fluorine |
| (d) | Cryolite | (iv) | Zinc |
- (a) (a) → (i), (b) → (iii), (c) → (iv), (d) → (ii)
- (b) (a) → (iii), (b) → (i), (c) → (ii), (d) → (iv)
- (c) (a) → (ii), (b) → (i), (c) → (iv), (d) → (iii)
- (d) (a) → (ii), (b) → (iv), (c) → (i), (d) → (iii)
Answer and solution
Answer (c) (a) → (ii), (b) → (i), (c) → (iv), (d) → (iii)
Solution
Chemistry ma’am · 3 steps
Write the formula of each ore, and the element it holds is right there in front of you.
- Use formulas. Ore names are hard to remember on their own. Recall each ore's chemical formula and read off the element that List II asks for.
Ore Formula Element from List II Kernite Na₂B₄O₇.4H₂O Boron (ii) Cassiterite SnO₂ Tin (i) Calamine ZnCO₃ Zinc (iv) Cryolite Na₃AlF₆ Fluorine (iii) - About cryolite. Cryolite is best known as the flux in the electrolysis of alumina, so it is usually linked with aluminium. Aluminium is not in List II, but its formula Na₃AlF₆ also carries six fluorine atoms, so it matches fluorine.
- So. The match is (a) → (ii), (b) → (i), (c) → (iv), (d) → (iii), which is option (c).
The idea to keep. For ore-matching questions, learn every ore together with its formula: cassiterite SnO₂, calamine ZnCO₃, kernite and borax for boron, cryolite and fluorspar for fluorine.
