Mischmetal is an alloy consisting mainly of :
- (a) lanthanoid and actinoid metals
- (b) actinoid and transition metals
- (c) lanthanoid metals
- (d) actinoid metals
Answer and solution
Answer (c) lanthanoid metals
Solution

Mischmetal is the NCERT alloy made almost entirely of lanthanoids, with only a little iron added.
- What it contains. Mischmetal is about 95% lanthanoid metals and about 5% iron, with traces of S, C, Ca and Al.
- Uses. It is alloyed with magnesium to make bullets, shells and lighter flints. Lanthanoids are reactive and spark easily, and that is why the alloy is useful.
- No actinoids. Actinoids are radioactive, and most of them are made artificially in tiny amounts. They are not used to make an everyday bulk alloy like this.
- So. Mischmetal is made mainly of lanthanoid metals, which is option (c).
The idea to keep. Remember mischmetal as about 95% lanthanoids plus about 5% iron. Its uses are Mg alloys for bullets, shells and lighter flints. Actinoids are never part of it.
