JEE Main chapters removed in 2024
For JEE Main 2024, NTA removed roughly one in six units from the syllabus, including Hydrogen and s-Block Elements, States of Matter and Metallurgy, and cut topics from others. In our question bank, Hydrogen and s-Block Elements went from about 1.2 questions per shift in the 2020–22 papers to almost none since 2024, and States of Matter from about one to almost none.

Biggest cuts inside units that stay
These units stay on the syllabus with some topics cut. Questions from the parts that remain are still asked.
NTA has still set questions on some cut topics since 2024, most often trigonometric equations (about 17 in our bank across the 2024–26 papers), so don't drop a topic on the syllabus alone.
Chemistry
- p-Block Elements: Group-wise study of Groups 13 to 18 removed (borax, diborane, silicates, ammonia, nitric acid, ozone, sulphuric acid, interhalogens, xenon compounds). Only the general introduction and trends remain. Since 2024, some questions have still involved p-Block compounds, often through salt analysis.
- Atomic Structure: Thomson's and Rutherford's models removed (Rutherford's model stays in Physics).
Mathematics
- Three Dimensional Geometry: Equations of a plane, intersection of a line and a plane, and coplanar lines removed. Lines, skew lines and the shortest distance between them remain.
- Trigonometry: Trigonometric equations and heights and distances are no longer listed.
- Calculus: Rolle's and Lagrange's mean value theorems, tangents and normals, integral as the limit of a sum, and formation of differential equations removed.
- Matrices and Determinants: Properties of determinants and elementary transformations removed.
- Sequences and Series: Sums of special series and arithmetico-geometric progression removed.
- Vector Algebra: Scalar and vector triple products removed.
- Probability: Bernoulli trials and binomial distribution removed.
- Coordinate Geometry: Translation of axes, angle bisectors, family of lines, and tangent conditions for circles and conics removed.
- Complex Numbers: Square root of a complex number and the triangle inequality removed.
- Binomial Theorem: Properties of binomial coefficients removed.
Physics
- Electronic Devices: All transistor topics removed. Diodes, LED, photodiode, solar cell, Zener diode and logic gates remain.
- Atoms and Nuclei: Radioactivity, decay law, and isotopes, isobars and isotones removed.
- Experimental Skills: Cut from 22 to 18 items: cooling curve, potentiometer, transistor characteristics and multimeter tasks removed.
- Oscillations and Waves: Free, forced and damped oscillations, resonance, and the Doppler effect removed.
- Thermodynamics: Carnot engine removed. Isothermal and adiabatic processes are now listed explicitly.
- Current Electricity: Potentiometer and the colour code of resistors removed.
- Magnetism: Earth's magnetic field, susceptibility, permeability and hysteresis, and the cyclotron removed.
- Properties of Solids and Liquids: Newton's law of cooling removed.
- Optics: Resolving power of microscopes and astronomical telescopes removed. Their magnifying power is still listed.
- Electromagnetic Induction and Alternating Currents: The quality factor of an LCR circuit removed. Resonance is still listed.
- Dual Nature of Matter and Radiation: The Davisson-Germer experiment removed.
Smaller cuts are listed in the official NTA syllabus.
Added in 2024
- Biomolecules (Chemistry): Hormones (general introduction) added.
- Several units (Physics): Some topics are now spelled out, e.g. motion in a vertical circle, banked roads, displacement current and the lens-maker formula. Most are standard NCERT content.
Does this apply to JEE Main 2027?
NTA has not published the JEE Main 2027 syllabus yet (as of October 2026). The 2025 and 2026 syllabi were the same as 2024's, apart from Physics no longer listing vector topics under kinematics (vectors are still in Maths). NTA's tentative calendar puts the first session in late January 2027, with details to come in the information bulletin. This page will be updated when the 2027 syllabus is out.
What this means for your prep
- Between them, the removed chapters we track went from about 6 questions per shift in 2020–22 to about one question every fifteen shifts since 2024, so they can wait until the units still on the syllabus are done.
- Don't drop a topic only because it is off the syllabus text: trigonometric equations are still asked (about 17 questions in our bank across the 2024–26 papers). Read the official NTA syllabus alongside recent papers.
- Put the time into the chapters asked in almost every shift. The free chapter-wise PYQ PDFs show how many questions each chapter had, year by year.
Practise the chapters that are still asked
There are about 100 free chapter-wise PYQ PDFs, each with an answer key, and you can practise the questions online with no login.

Which chapters were removed from the JEE Main syllabus in 2024?
NTA removed these whole units. Chemistry: Hydrogen, s-Block Elements, General Principles and Processes of Isolation of Metals (Metallurgy), Surface Chemistry, States of Matter, Polymers, Chemistry in Everyday Life and Environmental Chemistry. Mathematics: Mathematical Induction and Mathematical Reasoning. Physics: Communication Systems. NTA also cut topics from p-Block Elements, Three Dimensional Geometry and others.
Are removed chapters still asked in JEE Main papers?
They are removed from the syllabus, and the papers show it. In our question bank, the removed chapters we track had about 6 questions per shift between them in the 2020–22 papers, and about one question every fifteen shifts in 2024–26.
Where can I practise older PYQs from these chapters?
The tables above link a free PYQ PDF with an answer key for each removed chapter that has one. Treat them as older PYQs: these units have not been on the syllabus since 2024.
How were these numbers counted?
We counted every question from the 2020–2026 JEE Main papers in PrepWiser's question bank, chapter by chapter, and divided by the number of shifts in each period. The bank holds about 86–87 questions per shift for 2021–24 and about 74–75 for 2025–26. The papers themselves had 90 questions in 2021–24, when each subject offered 10 numerical questions and students answered 5, and 75 in 2020 and 2025–26. A few may be missing or tagged to a different chapter, so treat the figures as approximate.
Counted from PrepWiser's JEE Main question bank (2020–2026 papers). NTA syllabus PDFs: 2023, 2024, 2026.
