Identify the factor from the following that does not affect electrolytic conductance of a solution.
- (a) The nature of solvent used.
- (b) The nature of the electrolyte added.
- (c) The nature of the electrode used.
- (d) Concentration of the electrolyte.
Answer and solution
Answer (c) The nature of the electrode used.
Solution

Conductance is about ions moving through the solution, so ask what controls the ions, not the metal plates.
- What carries current. In an electrolytic solution the current is carried by ions moving through the liquid. So anything that changes how many ions there are, or how fast they move, changes the conductance.
Factor How it acts on the ions Affects conductance? Nature of solvent A solvent with a higher dielectric constant separates ions better, and a less viscous one lets them move faster Yes Nature of electrolyte A strong electrolyte gives more ions than a weak one, and ion size and charge change their speed Yes Nature of electrode The electrode only collects the current at the surface. It adds no ions and does not change how ions move in the solution No Concentration It changes how many ions there are in a given volume and how strongly they pull on each other Yes - So. The nature of the electrode does not affect electrolytic conductance, so the answer is (c).
The idea to keep. Electrolytic conductance depends on the ions: the electrolyte, the solvent, the concentration and the temperature. The electrodes are only the contacts that let current in and out.
