Which one of the following is a water soluble vitamin, that is not excreted easily?
- (a) Vitamin B₂
- (b) Vitamin B₁
- (c) Vitamin B₆
- (d) Vitamin B₁₂
Answer and solution
Answer (d) Vitamin B₁₂
Solution
Chemistry ma’am · 4 steps
All four are water soluble, so look for the one B vitamin your liver can store: B12.
- Two groups. Vitamins A, D, E and K are fat soluble and are stored in the liver and fatty tissue. The B group and vitamin C are water soluble.
- Water soluble ones. Water soluble vitamins dissolve in body fluids and pass out in urine. Most cannot be stored, so they must be taken in the diet regularly.
- The exception. Vitamin B₁₂ (cyanocobalamin) is the exception. It is water soluble but is stored in the liver, so it is not excreted easily.
- So. The answer is (d), vitamin B₁₂. Vitamins B₁, B₂ and B₆ are water soluble and are readily lost in urine.
The idea to keep. Water soluble vitamins (B group and C) leave the body in urine, so you need them daily. Remember the one exception: B₁₂ is stored in the liver.
