From the vitamins A, B₁, B₆, B₁₂, C, D, E and K, the number of vitamins that can be stored in our body is _________.
Answer and solution
Answer 5
Solution
Chemistry ma’am · 3 steps
Sort them by solubility first, then remember the one water-soluble vitamin your liver keeps: B₁₂.
- Fat-soluble ones. Vitamins A, D, E and K dissolve in fat. They are stored in the liver and in adipose (fat) tissue, so the body keeps a reserve of them.
- Water-soluble ones. The B group and C dissolve in water. Any extra is passed out in urine, so they must be supplied regularly in the diet. The exception is vitamin B₁₂, which the liver stores for a long time.
Vitamin Soluble in Stored in the body? A fat yes D fat yes E fat yes K fat yes B₁₂ water yes, in the liver B₁ water no B₆ water no C water no - So. The four fat-soluble vitamins plus B₁₂ can be stored, giving 5.
The common slip: 4. Counting only the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K gives 4. Vitamin B₁₂ is water-soluble but is still stored in the liver.
The idea to keep. Fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, K are stored in liver and fat tissue. Water-soluble ones are washed out in urine, except B₁₂, which the liver holds on to.
