Solution
Chemistry ma’am · 3 steps
Ask what shape the protein takes: long parallel threads, or chains folded up into a ball?
- Fibrous proteins. The polypeptide chains run side by side and are held together by hydrogen bonds and disulphide bonds. This gives long, fibre-like structures that are usually insoluble in water and do structural work.
- Globular proteins. The chains coil around and fold into a compact, roughly spherical shape. These are usually soluble in water. Insulin, haemoglobin and albumins are common examples.
Protein Where you find it Shape Keratin hair, wool, nails, silk fibrous Albumin egg white, blood plasma globular, water-soluble Collagen tendons, skin, bone fibrous Myosin muscle fibres fibrous - So. Keratin, collagen and myosin are all fibrous. Albumin is globular, so the answer is (b).
The idea to keep. Structural jobs like hair, tendon and muscle need fibrous proteins, which do not dissolve in water. Proteins dissolved in blood or egg white, like albumin and haemoglobin, are globular.
