Type of amino acids obtained by hydrolysis of proteins is :
- (a) γ
- (b) β
- (c) α
- (d) δ
Answer and solution
Answer (c) α
Solution
Chemistry ma’am · 3 steps
Look at where the amino group sits: in every protein amino acid it is on the carbon right next to COOH.
- Naming the carbons. In an amino acid, the carbon joined directly to -COOH is the α carbon. The next ones along the chain are β, γ and δ.
H₂N-CH(R)-COOH
- Protein amino acids. Hydrolysis breaks the peptide bonds of a protein. All 20 standard amino acids it gives have the -NH₂ group and the side chain R on that same α carbon.
- So. Proteins give α-amino acids, option (c).
The idea to keep. Greek letters count carbons outward from the COOH carbon. Every amino acid that builds a protein has its NH₂ on the α carbon.
