The correct nomenclature for the following compound is :
- (a) 2-carboxy-4-hydroxyhept-7-enal
- (b) 2-formyl-4-hydroxyhept-7-enoic acid
- (c) 2-carboxy-4-hydroxyhept-6-enal
- (d) 2-formyl-4-hydroxyhept-6-enoic acid
Answer and solution
Answer (d) 2-formyl-4-hydroxyhept-6-enoic acid
Solution

Find the senior group first: -COOH beats -CHO, so it gets carbon 1 and the suffix.
- Principal group. The molecule has -COOH, -CHO, -OH and a C=C. Carboxylic acid ranks above aldehyde and alcohol, so the name ends in -oic acid. The -CHO becomes the prefix formyl and the -OH becomes hydroxy.
- Choose the chain. The main chain must contain the -COOH carbon. Going from it through the zig-zag to the CH₂= end gives 7 carbons. The branch toward the -CHO gives only 3, so the -CHO stays as a substituent on C2.
HOOC(1)-CH(2)(CHO)-CH₂(3)-CH(4)(OH)-CH₂(5)-CH(6)=CH₂(7)
- Read the locants. The formyl group is on C2 and the hydroxy group on C4. The double bond runs from C6 to C7, and it takes the lower number, so it is hept-6-ene. Prefixes go in alphabetical order: formyl before hydroxy.
- So. The name is 2-formyl-4-hydroxyhept-6-enoic acid, option (d).
The idea to keep. Rank the functional groups first. The highest one takes the suffix and C1, and every other group becomes a prefix. A double bond gets the locant of its first carbon.
