Answer and solution

Answer (d)

Solution

Chemistry ma’am · 3 steps

In a bond-line formula, carbons become corners and their hydrogens vanish. Find the option with no CH.

  1. Bond-line rules. Each corner or line end is a carbon atom, and hydrogens on carbon are not drawn. Heteroatoms such as O and N are written out, along with any H on them, so OH stays OH.
  2. Read the molecule. In HOCH(CN)₂ the central carbon carries one H, one OH and two CN groups. In bond-line form, this carbon is just the point where three lines meet. Its H is left out.
    OptionCentral carbonType of formula
(a)C and its H drawn with bondsstructural formula
    (b)written as CHcondensed formula
(c)written as CH, with C≡N showncondensed formula
(d)a bare junction of three linesbond-line formula
  3. So. Only (d) shows the central carbon as a vertex with its H left out. The OH and the two CN groups hang off that vertex, so the answer is (d).

The idea to keep. Bond-line means no C and no H-on-C written anywhere. If you can still read the letters CH at a carbon, it is a condensed or structural formula, not bond-line.
