Cyclohexene
is ________ type of an organic compound.

- (a) Benzenoid aromatic
- (b) Benzenoid non-aromatic
- (c) Acyclic
- (d) Alicyclic
Answer and solution
Answer (d) Alicyclic
Solution
Chemistry ma’am · 4 steps
Cyclohexene has a ring but no benzene ring: one double bond is not enough to make it aromatic.
- Open or closed. The six carbons in the figure join into a closed ring, so the compound is cyclic. That rules out acyclic (open-chain).
- Benzene ring or not. A benzenoid compound contains a benzene ring, with three alternating double bonds and 6 delocalised π electrons. Cyclohexene has only one C=C and four sp³ carbons, so it has no benzene ring and is not aromatic.
- Alicyclic. A carbocyclic compound whose ring is not aromatic behaves like an open-chain (aliphatic) compound. Such compounds are called alicyclic, like cyclopropane, cyclohexane and cyclohexene.
- So. Cyclohexene is a ring compound without aromatic character, so it is alicyclic, option (d).
The idea to keep. Sort a compound in two checks: is it a ring, and is that ring benzene-like? A ring without a benzene ring, like cyclohexane or cyclohexene, is alicyclic.
