JEE Main 2022 · 27 July · morning · Single correct · +4 / −1
Given below are two statements.
Statement I : Hydrogen peroxide can act as an oxidizing agent in both acidic and basic conditions.
Statement II : Density of hydrogen peroxide at 298 K is lower than that of D₂ O.
In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below.
- (a) Both Statement I and Statement II are true.
- (b) Both Statement I and Statement II are false.
- (c) Statement I is true but Statement II is false.
- (d) Statement I is false but Statement II is true.
Answer and solution
Answer (c) Statement I is true but Statement II is false.
Solution
Chemistry ma’am · 4 steps
Test each statement separately: one reaction in acid, one in base, then compare two densities.
- Oxidizing in acid. In acid, H₂O₂ oxidizes Fe²⁺ to Fe³⁺: 2Fe²⁺ + 2H⁺ + H₂O₂ → 2Fe³⁺ + 2H₂O. It also turns black PbS into white PbSO₄.
- Oxidizing in base. In base it still oxidizes: 2Fe²⁺ + H₂O₂ → 2Fe³⁺ + 2OH⁻, and Mn²⁺ + H₂O₂ → Mn⁴⁺ + 2OH⁻. So Statement I is true. It can also act as a reducing agent in both media.
- Compare densities. At 298 K, liquid H₂O₂ has a density of 1.44 g cm⁻³, while D₂O has 1.106 g cm⁻³. Hydrogen peroxide is the denser liquid, so Statement II is false.
- So. Statement I is true and Statement II is false, which is option (c).
The idea to keep. H₂O₂ is an oxidant and a reductant in both acid and base. For density, remember the order H₂O₂ (1.44) > D₂O (1.106) > H₂O (about 1), in g cm⁻³.
