JEE Main 2021 · 16 March · evening · Single correct · +4 / −1

The correct statements about H₂O₂ are :
(A) used in the treatment of effluents.
(B) used as both oxidising and reducing agents.
(C) the two hydroxyl groups lie in the same plane.
(D) miscible with water.
Choose the correct answer from the options given below :

  1. (a) (A), (C) and (D) only
  2. (b) (A), (B), (C) and (D)
  3. (c) (A), (B) and (D) only
  4. (d) (B), (C) and (D) only
Answer and solution

Answer (c) (A), (B) and (D) only

Oxygen at -1 explains the redox, and the open-book shape is what knocks out statement (C).

  1. Oxygen at minus one. In H₂O₂, oxygen is at -1, halfway between -2 and 0. It can drop to -2 (oxidising agent) or rise to 0 as O₂ (reducing agent), in both acidic and basic media.
  2. Open-book shape. H₂O₂ is non-planar. The two O–H bonds lie in different planes, like the covers of a half-open book. The angle between the planes is 111.5° in the gas phase and 90.2° in the solid.
    StatementCorrect?Reason
    (A) Treats effluentsYesIt oxidises pollutants in industrial and domestic waste water
    (B) Oxidising and reducingYesOxidises Fe²⁺ to Fe³⁺; reduces MnO₄⁻ to Mn²⁺, giving off O₂
    (C) Both OH groups in one planeNoOpen-book structure, so the two O–H bonds lie in different planes
    (D) Miscible with waterYesHydrogen bonds with water, so it mixes in all proportions
  3. So. Statements (A), (B) and (D) are correct and (C) is wrong, which is option (c).

The idea to keep. An element in an intermediate oxidation state can act both ways in redox. For H₂O₂, remember the open-book shape: it is never planar.
