JEE Main 2023 · 31 January · evening · Single correct · +4 / −1
Given below are two statements :
Statement I : H₂ O₂ is used in the synthesis of Cephalosporin
Statement II : H₂ O₂ is used for the restoration of aerobic conditions to sewage wastes.
In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below :
- (a) Statement I is incorrect but Statement II is correct
- (b) Statement I is correct but Statement II is incorrect
- (c) Both Statement I and Statement II are incorrect
- (d) Both Statement I and Statement II are correct
Answer and solution
Answer (d) Both Statement I and Statement II are correct
Solution
Chemistry ma’am · 3 steps
Both lines come straight from the NCERT list of uses of H₂O₂, so check each against that list.
- Statement I. H₂O₂ is used in the synthesis of the drugs cephalosporin and ascorbic acid. NCERT names cephalosporin under its uses in the chemical industry, so Statement I is correct.
- Statement II. H₂O₂ breaks down to give oxygen: 2H₂O₂ → 2H₂O + O₂. That oxygen brings back aerobic conditions in sewage wastes, so aerobic bacteria can work again. This is listed under its environmental uses, so Statement II is also correct.
- So. Both statements are correct, which is option (d).
The idea to keep. Learn the NCERT uses of H₂O₂ as one list: bleach, antiseptic (perhydrol), drug synthesis (cephalosporin, ascorbic acid), and its oxygen for treating sewage and industrial waste.
