Addition of H₂SO₄ to BaO₂ produces :
- (a) BaO, SO₂ and H₂O
- (b) BaHSO₄ and O₂
- (c) BaSO₄, H₂ and O₂
- (d) BaSO₄ and H₂O₂
Answer and solution
Answer (d) BaSO₄ and H₂O₂
Solution
Chemistry ma’am · 4 steps
Barium peroxide is a salt of H₂O₂, so a stronger acid hands the peroxide back.
- Spot the ion. BaO₂ contains the peroxide ion O₂²⁻, which is the conjugate base of the weak acid H₂O₂. Oxygen here is in the -1 state.
- Acid displaces it. Dilute H₂SO₄ is a much stronger acid, so it protonates the peroxide ion to give H₂O₂. No oxidation or reduction happens, so no O₂ or H₂ is formed.
BaO₂.8H₂O + H₂SO₄ → BaSO₄ v + H₂O₂ + 8H₂O
- Why it works. BaSO₄ is insoluble and settles out as a white precipitate. Filtering it off leaves a dilute solution of H₂O₂, which is the laboratory method of preparing hydrogen peroxide.
- So. The products are BaSO₄ and H₂O₂, which is option (d).
The idea to keep. A metal peroxide plus dilute acid is an acid-base swap: the acid takes the metal and gives back H₂O₂. Choose BaO₂ with H₂SO₄ so the side product precipitates.
